TBN or Trinity Broadcast Network has what I thought was going to be a decent commercial on their channel recently. My parents watch those channels all of the time. The commercial starts off by saying why you need a Last Will so when you die your estate can stay in your family and not be taken over by the government. I was like ok a nonreligious related commercial on TBN finally, but I was so wrong. Towards the end of the commercial the narrator says, when you do write your will make sure you donate part of your estate to TBN. I was so disgusted when that was said and they played that commercial at least 5 more times. It like most of the programming on those networks it simply disgusted me and it insulted me. I know that Christians donate money, homes, cars, and various other items to their church or house of worship when they die or there families do after someone dies. That to me is ok. After members of my family passed we donated stuff to real charities that can use the stuff like, Goodwill.
That commercial was just in really poor taste. I mean that network bleeds its members dry when they are alive but to promote donating to us when you die that is just wrong. I mean their are more important organizations that you can give to when you are alive and after you are dead. These organizations actually help people, like the American Cancer Society.

ReplyDeleteI have no problem with donating to churches or "Christian" organizations if they in turn use the money to help those in the community who need the help. Through food banks and at times utility help I have received help from these organization. But when I see the donated money wasted on stuff like an air conditioned doghouse (700 Club) it infuriates me. The tradition of donating to such organizations comes out of the churches' duty to protect the community it serves. The word chapel comes from the word comes from a protected robe that went over the shoulders to keep rain and wind out. Story has it that a priest coming upon a freezing man gave him this garment in an effort to keep him warm and thus safe. This is the underlying teaching in the tithe, giving 10% (as a general rule) to help those in the community. The tithe is also used to run the church, pay its finances so that it can be a place of worship and refuge from the world. Too bad religion has become so much like a corporation it has forgotten its mission of mercy. I don't think many of them have a clue what Jesus would do.
