College Mergers: My Thoughts

In recent years colleges close to where I live are merging. Most are doing it to cut back costs and are supposed to bring more to the new areas where the schools are. The college I attend now is a prefect example of a technical college merger. They have been cutting costs, laying off employees, killing programs at the lower population campus, putting some better programs on the main campus (which is an hour away from where I live), and it just caused alot of confusion. My former program suffered from this confusion.  My college has 4 campuses. The attendance at the campus I go to has dropped severely, mostly in part due to students who want the better programs are going to another campus or their entire program of study is online. Online classes are the major reason no one wants to attend a real class. Some classes are good online, but not everyone can do an online class without detailed instruction. Plus the teachers do not do their part to prevent cheating in their current class or any of their future classes. I had one online class where the teacher prevented anyone from cheating. Even though the tests were timed anyone has those few extra seconds to google a question and find the answer.

Another pair of technical colleges are supposed to merge this summer and two (two) year colleges merged last year. I hope things go better for them.
